Cannabis shop short-lived

Shortly after opening his business in Sedgefield over Easter Weekend 2019, a 31 year old man from Wilderness was arrested on a charge of dealing with illegal substances.

The business (name withheld), situated in a business centre along the Main Service road in Sedgefield has been advertised as a Nursery, Health and Coffee Shop.

According to Captain Malcolm Pojie, spokesperson for the South African Police Services, despite the recent changes to legislation, legalising the private use and cultivation of marijuana, the selling of marijuana products remain illegal.

Approximately two hours after opening the doors, police members attached to the Outeniqua K-9 unit received information about the opening of the business, and conducted a search of the premises.

Goods with an estimated value of R80 000 was confiscated and included various forms of packaged cannabis oils, sweets, rusks, and cakes containing cannabis. An undisclosed amount of cash was also confiscated.

The owner of the business (name withheld) was arrested on the spot and is scheduled to appear in the Knysna Magistrates Court soon.
