Corporate trip ends in tragedy for Durban man

Shortly after 3pm on Saturday 9 February 2019, NSRI Station 23 Wilderness duty crew were activated following reports from members of the public at a camp site along the Touw River in Wilderness, of a bystander performing CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) on a man up the river from the camp site.

A NSRI rescue vehicle, SA National Parks (SANPark) rangers and WC Government Health EMS responded to the scene.

Once at the scene, a SANParks boat was used to carry NSRI medics, a doctor from George, who was staying at the camp site, and an EMS paramedic to the scene further up the river.

NSRI medics, the doctor, and the EMS paramedic continued with extensive CPR efforts but sadly the man passed away.

It appears that the 44 year old male, from Durban, on a corporate weekend with colleagues, reportedly fell out of a kayak while paddling on the river when a colleague rescued him to the shore and initiated CPR while raising the alarm.

Police opened an inquest docket, and an autopsy will be conducted on the man to determine the cause of death.

Condolences are conveyed to family, friends and colleagues of the man.
