Big Foot caught on camera

A female elephant of the subspecies Loxodonta Africana was caught on camera in the Knysna forest.

SANParks scientist, Lizette Moolman, said that cameras were active in the forest for a period of 15 months, during which the same elephant was identified at 140 times. Moolman also said that the animal was alone in all the captured events, and no other elephant was caught on camera. The camera trap technology that was used covered the entire range of the elephant in the forest.

The subspecies, Loxodonta Africana, is the same as all the other elephant populations in South Africa.

Moolman also said that the elephant is approximately 45 years old and roams in the indigenous fynbos and forest areas in SANParks managed land as well as neighbouring private land.

Paddy Gordon, Garden Route National Park Manager, told reporters that the camera footage assisted the management of SANParks to also see and understand some of the secrets of the forest.
