At least two homes destroyed in Garden Route fire

Mossel Bay Municipality confirmed that two houses have been destroyed by the veld fire raging out of control on 21 January 2019 in Hartenbos Heuwels, Mossel Bay. A Mossel Bay fire fighter has also been injured.

Fire fighters from Mossel Bay is working hard to get the fire under control. The crew is assisted by George Municipality and Garden Route District Municipality, as well as aerial support and assistance from Working on Fire and Mossel Bay Helicopters. Our heartfelt thanks to all involved.

We hope to bring the fire under control soon, but the fire is being fanned on by the strong wind in the area.

There are no evacuations at this point, however, if need be, Mossel Bay will give instruction to do so.

Learners from Sonskynvallei, near where the fire is raging, is being accommodated at the Hartenbos Primary's School's afterschool care for obvious safety reasons.

The R328 between Mossel Bay and Oudsthoorn is currently closed to traffic.

A fire has also broken out at Boplaas, north of Touwsranten. Fire teams from Garden Route District Municipality are trying to bring the fire under control.

UPDATE ON FIRE:

The fire in the Hartenbos area which destroyed two homes has been contained.

The R328 between Mossel Bay and Oudsthoorn has been re-opened for traffic.
