Expect heavy rain, snow and localised flooding

The South African Weather Service informed the Eden Disaster Management Centre that they can expect heavy rain, snowfalls and the possibility of localised flooding in and around The Garden Route, from Friday 7 September 2018, into the weekend.

Rainfall of between 40 and 60mm can be expected along the coastal areas from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay, and exceeding 80mm in the areas around the Outeniqua and Swartberg Mountains.

In addition to the rain, we can expect snow of up to 20cm on the Outeniqua and Swartberg Mountains. This may lead to hazardous driving conditions.

Disaster Management teams as well as Fire And Rescue teams are on high alert throughout the region. The Mossel Bay Municipality prepared a channel at Great Brak River mouth to drain the estuary should the water levels pose a threat. SANParks also prepared a channel at the Touw River mouth in Wilderness, while the Swartvlei estuary is under surveillance.
