Fires in The Garden Route

CapeNature has 68 firefighters working on the Swartberg and Kammanassie fires, both fires were started through lightening on the 23rd of January 2018.

Kammanassie:
CapeNature, Eden District Municipality, Working On Fire in collaboration with private landowners are suppressing the fire at the foot of the Kamanassie Mountains (Buffelsdrift area). Aerial surveys are also conducted to monitor fire progress in inaccessible areas. The firefighting effort will continue for today and into the weekend.

The Kammanassie fire is expanding at a rapid rate and has already burnt 10 year old veld, and is currently burning in 5 to 10 year old veld.
One Working On Fire crew member is seriously injured when the truck was lost. He sustained burns to the face and arms/hands and he is currently at the Mediclinic Hospital in George.

Some houses and farmlands are in danger and could be affected.

Swartberg:
The fire which started on top of Meirngspoort east is mostly under control.

We are working closely with our partners; Eden District Fire Services, Southern Cape FPA and WOF.

The Swartberg fire has burnt through 8 year old veld and has moved towards 14 year old veld.

The main objects are the safety of responders, property and the environment.

Potential Risks:
Temperatures are expected to reach up to 40 degrees with strong winds. These hot, dry weather conditions predicted is a concern.

The public is called to please stay away from both fire lines. Should they wish to donate water, energy drinks, cold drinks and non-perishable foods (only) for the firefighters that it please be delivered to the Incident Commands at the CapeNature Kammanassie office in Uniondale and the CapeNature Swartberg office in Oudtshoorn.
