Seal on beach at Buffels Bay

On 14 January 2018, a young Cape Fur Seal was encountered by the public on a beach at Buffels Bay.

After receiving reports from Tenikwa Wildlife Sanctuary and residents from Brenton on Sea, Members of the Plett Stranding Network went to assess the situation.

Although the seal was spotted coming ashore at regular intervals since Friday, it appeared strong and in good condition by this afternoon. A decision was made to relocate the seal to a secluded beach where it would not be disturbed by well-meaning members of the public. It was fitted with uniquely numbered plastic flipper tags as part of ongoing research, and so that it can be identified if it comes ashore again.

Seals often come ashore to rest and are not always in need of rescue. They are also capable of recovering from some minor wounds on their own. Interference is however needed when they are found resting on busy beaches. Here they may pose a danger to people and dogs who often approach to close out of curiosity.

Our seal biologist is experienced in safe handling of wild seals and acts as agent for the Port Elizabeth Museum to collect valuable samples for research. If you find a seal ashore, dead or alive, please report to the Plett Stranding Hotline at 072 817 7979.

Remember, seals are protected by the Seabirds and Seals Protection Act and it is an offence to disturb them.
